Dignity of the Child:
For Our Own SakeJesus says "Let the children come to me," Matt 19:14 and "Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like child will not enter it." Mk 10:15
Come let us ponder the developmental characteristics and spiritual potential of the young child who Jesus holds up as a model for our spiritual demeanor. Let us raise our awareness to these attributes and discover ways to nurture these gifts in them and in ourselves.

Lewis called the "abolition of man", or the denial of any values that transcend human will and the subsequent collapse of the traditional view of man as a dependent being created in God's image. In order to help society recover from this abolition and its fruits, the Church must proclaim and model a vision of the human person that emphasizes that all of life is a gift. This presentation will address the sexual revolution, its conceptual roots, and continuing effects and draw attention to some of the resources of the Catholic Tradition that can help us understand and respond positively to that revolution.

Can Abstaining be Sinful?
The questions to be discussed include: Whether the use of NFP to space the births of children is essentially the same as artificial birth control?; Is it permissible for a husband and wife to abstain during the wife's fertile periods and engage in the marital act during her infertile periods and under what conditions may this be done?; Finally, Are there sufficient reasons for couples in our society to choose continence during a wife's fertile periods?
Fr. John EhrichFather John Ehrich, MA, MDiv, STL, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Phoenix in the year 2000. After five years of parish ministry, he spent two years studying moral theology at the Academia Alfonsiana in Rome where he earned his Sacred Theology Licentiate in 2007. Fr. A New Way to
Explain Humanae VitaeWhen released in 1968, the encyclical Humanae Vitae met with great resistance and today, the vast majority of Catholics either reject it or are simply unaware of the Church's teachings on human sexuality. The ground-breaking work of Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body gives the church a convincing and inspiring language for Catholics (and all men and women who seek the truth) to discover the liberating truth of God's plan for sexual love.
Fr. Charlie GoraiebFr. Charlie Goraieb attended St John's Seminary in Camarillo, California and was ordained in 1991. In 2002 he attended the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family to further his studies on the Theology of the Body. He is pastor of Queen of Peace parish in Mesa and is a frequent speaker, both locally and nationally, on the Theology of the Body and married love. Fr Goraieb was instrumental in the establishment of the John Paul Resource Center for Theology of the Body and Culture in Phoenix. He is also a member of the board for the Phoenix Diocesan Office of Natural Family Planning.

Inspiring Girls
to be Enchanting
Using themes presented in Disney's recent movie "Enchanted," Mary looks at the ways in which girls are attractive to others by their innocence and their reflection of God's image. Regardless of participants having viewed the film, this talk will be meaningful for all audiences with ideas and examples from the film summarized throughout the presentation. The talk will encourage parents, teachers, and anyone who spends time with young women to cultivate the fullness of life and freedom of chastity for which they were created in God's original plan. This session is designed to promote a dignity and wholeness in girls in order that they may attract others to Christ.
Mary MooreMary Moore is a freelance writer and a regular columnist ("Wholly Family") for The Catholic Sun newspaper of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. As a mother and wife, former high school English teacher, and daughter of a 35-year veteran deacon, Mary finds writing an ideal avenue for sharing the joys and challenges of living out the vocation of Catholic family life. She and her husband, Mark, speak for several marriage preparation ministries, and she believes that the renewal of the Church belongs to solid, faithful families who live in obedience to Christ and serve Him with joy in their vocation. She lives in Chandler with her husband and three children.

Vicar of Christ
John Henry Newman explained the Catholic view of the human conscience as that "messenger of him who, both in nature and in grace, speaks to us behind a veil, and teaches and rules us by his representatives." In the most intimate and concrete ways, then, we encounter God in the sanctuary of human conscience. This encounter requires responsible education of the conscience, which guarantees the adventure of genuine freedom. Newman's insight provides a rich, compelling approach to the formation of conscience which enjoys a broad and fruitful application to the Catholic sexual ethic.
Fr. John MuirAfter growing up in the Arcadia Neighborhood in Phoenix, Rev. John R. Muir, STL, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Phoenix in June 2007. He spent his first year as a priest at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Chicago completing a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, specializing in Systematic Theology.

(Real) Men
Boys are in their own particular type of trouble in Western culture. Social science data as well as experience show both a lack of motivation and a lack of knowledge as to how to grow up. Catholic boys are not immune to this phenomenon; in fact, the vocations dearth to both the priesthood and committed marriage among Catholic men is reflective of the general trend. Phelan will illustrate how at the root of this crisis is a lack of coherent vision for Christian manhood and sanctity and, by looking at the lives of two great saints, indicate a better vision and formation of Christian young men.

educator by trade, Mike has degrees in education and English from the University of Dallas and taught Jr. high and High school literature and history as well as coached basketball for eleven years. Mike and his wife, Sharon, have five children (four boys).

Marriage Preparation
and Humanae VitaeThe time of excitement and expectation experienced by a couple is certainly a time the Lord wishes to use to draw his children closer to Himself and invite them to live His loving plan to the full. This is a time when the proclamation of the Good News of God's love can awaken and transform hearts. This session will address how the sometimes misunderstood teachings of Humanae Vitae can be explained and held up as the only worthy approach to the dignity of the call to married life. Indeed marriage preparation itself is a school of love that leads couples, not only to avoid the breakdown of married love, but to the joyful adventure God has planned for them.
Fr. Paul SullivanFr. Paul Sullivan is the Associate Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Phoenix. He was ordained in 2007 and has served as Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Glendale.

Couples who use NFP may decide to postpone a pregnancy and will have periods of abstinence in each menstrual cycle when they are waiting for the infertile time to engage in the marital embrace again. Couples learn to express love and affection in non-genital ways during the fertile time which helps to foster intimacy and better communication in their marriages. The sacrifices made during the fertile time can help couples grow in self-mastery and help them spiritually to connect their sacrifice with our Lord’s passion. The joy of union again when the infertile time comes can also be related to the joy of Christ’s resurrection. Embracing NFP at this level doesn’t happen automatically but cycle after cycle of living periodic abstinence becomes a school of marital chastity.
A panel of experienced NFP teachers will candidly discuss the real-life challenges and the fruits of living periodic abstinence. Questions are welcome.

Jim & Nancy Spina,Jim and Nancy Spina first met during a Saint Maria Goretti Life Teen retreat in February of 1999 and celebrated seven years of marriage in May of 2008. They both enjoy a career in law enforcement with a local agency and have three beautiful children: Clayton, 6 yrs; Calley, 4 years; and Boston, 2 years. Jim and Nancy have been teaching NFP to couples in the diocese for approximately six years. Dcn Joe & Diana Stickney,Joe and Diana first learned about NFP at a women's healthcare presentation in Cambridge, MA, before they were married. When they arrived in Phoenix, they took classes from the Couple to Couple League. After the birth of their second child, they consulted with Dr. James Statt at the Phoenix NFP Center. Six months after that, they were asked to be instructors, and the rest is a history of 26 years with the Center.
Joe is a Deacon at St. Louis King Parish. He is a full time teacher of Theology at Brophy College Preparatory. Diana works for the Diocese of Phoenix in the Office of Peace and Justice, assisting parishes as they organize services and advocacy for the marginalized, including for children in foster care. Sean & Aryn Sylvester,Sean and Aryn first met as freshmen at Seton Catholic H.S. While nothing serious came from their first meetings, God obviously had bigger and better plans. From the onset of their marriage in June of 2000, they have used NFP. On their honeymoon, they describe it as the 'biggest leap of faith we had taken' and go on to say that 'we leaped and God caught us'. In the spring of 2002, they began the education process to become NFP instructors. Through the merits and prayers of the Blessed Virgin, and by her influence through the Legion of Mary, they have experienced many blessing not just in using NFP, but also in teaching dozens of couples how (and more importantly why) to use NFP in their own marriages.
Currently, they attend St. Mary's in Chandler and live close by with their 4 children: Logan - 6, Andrea - 4, MaryJo - 2 and Catherine - 8 mos. John & Sarah WilmowskiJohn and Sarah Wilmowski have been married for 8 years. They are parishioners at St. Thomas the Apostle and have been teaching NFP for 7 years, and have been practicing it for 8 years. They are also involved with the FOCCUS program at St. Thomas. They have 3 children here on earth, and one little saint in heaven. Sarah stays home with the children and home schools their oldest. John is in the fire protection industry.
