speaker imageDr. Jennifer Roback MorseJennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D. brings a unique voice to discussions of love, marriage, sexuality and the family. Born into a Catholic working class family, Dr. Morse earned a doctorate in economics during her twelve year lapse from the faith. A committed career woman before having children, she taught economics for fifteen years at Yale University and George Mason University. The devastating experience of infertility brought her to her knees and back to the practice of the Catholic faith. In 1991, she and her husband adopted a two year old Romanian boy, and gave birth to a baby girl. She left her full-time university teaching post in 1996 to move with her family to California. She is now a part-time Research Fellow at the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty. She is a regular columnist in National Catholic Register and writes and speaks about love, marriage, sexuality and the family, as well as economics. Until August 2006, Dr. Morse and her husband were foster parents for San Diego County, where they now reside. Her widely acclaimed presentations combine high quality information from the social sciences, the riches of traditional Catholic teaching and her own personal faith journey.
Panel Discussion: What God Brings to Our Bedroom - Living the Paschal Mystery One Cycle at a Time
Couples who use NFP may decide to postpone a pregnancy and will have periods of abstinence in each menstrual cycle when they are waiting for the infertile time to engage in the marital embrace again. Couples learn to express love and affection in non-genital ways during the fertile time which helps to foster intimacy and better communication in their marriages. The sacrifices made during the fertile time can help couples grow in self-mastery and help them spiritually to connect their sacrifice with our Lord’s passion. The joy of union again when the infertile time comes can also be related to the joy of Christ’s resurrection. Embracing NFP at this level doesn’t happen automatically but cycle after cycle of living periodic abstinence becomes a school of marital chastity.

A panel of experienced NFP teachers will candidly discuss the real-life challenges and the fruits of living periodic abstinence. Questions are welcome.

Jim & Nancy Spina,Jim and Nancy Spina first met during a Saint Maria Goretti Life Teen retreat in February of 1999 and celebrated seven years of marriage in May of 2008. They both enjoy a career in law enforcement with a local agency and have three beautiful children: Clayton, 6 yrs; Calley, 4 years; and Boston, 2 years. Jim and Nancy have been teaching NFP to couples in the diocese for approximately six years. Dcn Joe & Diana Stickney,Joe and Diana first learned about NFP at a women's healthcare presentation in Cambridge, MA, before they were married. When they arrived in Phoenix, they took classes from the Couple to Couple League. After the birth of their second child, they consulted with Dr. James Statt at the Phoenix NFP Center. Six months after that, they were asked to be instructors, and the rest is a history of 26 years with the Center.
Joe is a Deacon at St. Louis King Parish. He is a full time teacher of Theology at Brophy College Preparatory. Diana works for the Diocese of Phoenix in the Office of Peace and Justice, assisting parishes as they organize services and advocacy for the marginalized, including for children in foster care.
Sean & Aryn Sylvester,Sean and Aryn first met as freshmen at Seton Catholic H.S. While nothing serious came from their first meetings, God obviously had bigger and better plans. From the onset of their marriage in June of 2000, they have used NFP. On their honeymoon, they describe it as the 'biggest leap of faith we had taken' and go on to say that 'we leaped and God caught us'. In the spring of 2002, they began the education process to become NFP instructors. Through the merits and prayers of the Blessed Virgin, and by her influence through the Legion of Mary, they have experienced many blessing not just in using NFP, but also in teaching dozens of couples how (and more importantly why) to use NFP in their own marriages.
Currently, they attend St. Mary's in Chandler and live close by with their 4 children: Logan - 6, Andrea - 4, MaryJo - 2 and Catherine - 8 mos.
John & Sarah WilmowskiJohn and Sarah Wilmowski have been married for 8 years. They are parishioners at St. Thomas the Apostle and have been teaching NFP for 7 years, and have been practicing it for 8 years. They are also involved with the FOCCUS program at St. Thomas. They have 3 children here on earth, and one little saint in heaven. Sarah stays home with the children and home schools their oldest. John is in the fire protection industry.
